Alexander Frei: The most important game in my career

Interviewed by the Swiss tv Alexander Frei has given voice to his thoughts concerning Euro 2008:

“Saturday at 6.00 pm the pressure we’ll have will be extraordinary. This game against the Czechs will possibly be the most important in my career. I look to this game with pride, happiness and a lot of confidence. I’ve always believed in the potential strength of the Swiss team. It has certainly improved with the arrivals of the likes of Inler and Fernandes. I don’t know if it’s stronger than the 2006 team but it is in any case certainly a younger team and it can go far in a tournament”

When asked about the World Cup, he says:
“We should have qualified against the Ukraine, although I do believe that it can face many consecutive games now. Our training is successful and I saw plenty of positive aggressiveness”.

He then describes his friendship with an old friend, Petr Cech (they played together in Rennes), “the best keeper in the world” and the Czechs, “a very strong team in defence and very creative in midfield, the absence of Rosicky is going to be a heavy one. But I believe this game will be decided by the trick of a genius or a petty detail”.

He then says that he prefers to play under bad weather: “I’d rather play under the rain than the sun, I don’t know why but it’s like this. It’s maybe due to the fact that I’ve played in Rennes and Dortmund, two very rainy towns”.

Let’s hope the Gods of Weather will witness a dazzling victory under heavy Basel rain.
