Swiss League Day 1: Zurich defeats Neuchatel, Vaduz wins in Luzern
Neuchatel Xamax – FC Zurich 1-2

In yesterday’s game FC Zurich narrowly defeated hosts Neuchatel Xamax in a very tight game. The first half was dominated by the guest team with several chances that were brilliantly stopped by young Xamax keeper Faivre. Yet Zurich took the lead through a deflected Hassli shot at the 34th minute. The first half ended 1-0.
Neuchatel Xamax came on the pitch with a different attitude and created several early chances and managed to draw at 48th minute through Besle, with some help from the Zurich defence that left 3 Xamax players in front of the keeper on the free kick.
Yet Neuchatel had no time to celebrate since less than a minute later Abdi found himself in front of Faivre and did not miss. Neuchatel squandered a series of chances, most of them parried by an excellent Leoni.
New Nati coach Hitzfeld with assitant Michel Pont were on the stands. My dear Ottmar, have you seen the quality of keeper Leoni? How about calling him for a game or two?

Sup Jan, I have a question if you don’t mind. Is Yassine Chikhaoui at FC Zurich still coming back from his knee injury or is he just riding the bench because he wants to leave really badly? I’ve heard both versions from Tunisian newspapers. I don’t think a half a year more in Zurich will hurt him but if he gets a solid offer it’d be cool to see him in another league. I’m guessing he’ll stay and get his value back up. How quickly these teams forget that he was tearing the Swiss league apart this past winter!

According to most media he has a knee injury that is going to keep him out at least for the first 5 games of the season. It is true that he was longing for another team (apparently Ajax and Bayern are very keen on him) but I think this season will be very important for him and Zurich.
His contract lasts until 2012 and, yes, he is a very impressive player. A pity he can’t play for Switzerland1

Thanks for the confirmation Jan
I don’t have a problem waiting for him to get better and start doing his thing again. I’d actually rather him stay at Zurich and keep his starters place then go to a big team and waste away on the bench. For our National team it’s more important that he have his legs under him than that he be signed by a big team. But if we can get both one day we won’t complain!
