Switzerland Update
Ah, the big day is drawing closer and in all the excitment of the now running World Cup, keeping you uptodate with Switzerland got a little forgotten.
What is new in the Swiss team. Actually not much – which is a good thing I reckon. The whole Johann Vonlanthen situation got resolved, when the FIFA accepted the diagnosis by the official team doctors, that he’s not match-fit. This means, JVL is definitely out of the team and Hakan Yakin is going to be part of the team. Not only did this episode bring unwanted tormoil into the otherwise calm preparation for the WC, not JVL might seriously have jeopardised his chances of every playing for Switzerland again: respect the chain of command. It’s pretty simple. But he’s always been a little full of himself.
Anyhow, that sorted out – what else is new? Marco Streller, our ever injured striker has a slight distension of the ligament in his knee. Aparantly it’s not going to be a problem at all. Which is a good thing, our depth upfront ain’t that great to loose another striker. Another short worry was Ludovic Magnin. He got a hit against his nose in training. A nose which was the reason for him missing quite a bit of games in the Bundesliga already. Luckily it was only a laceration that could be stiched up.
So, all seems to be ok. The captain, Johann Vogel is happy with the preparation and we’re all looking forwared to the game against France.
Hopp Schwiiz.

The French are going into this like they’ve just got back from Dunkirk in 1940: Here’s how Le Monde puts it this afternoon, on the front page: “After the mind-boggling defeats of 2002 and 2004 [in the 2002 World Cup the defending champion French were guillotined out of the First Round after scoring not a single goal, and had as blithering a showing at Euro 2004 in Portugal] the Blues begin the 2006 World Cup today in Stuttgart against a redoubtable Swiss team that has shed all its scruples [or complexes, as the French word has it]. Only a victory will enable forgetting the traumas of the previous World Cup, with that first-match loss to Senegal, 0-1, which derailed in one shot an overconfident team. Most of all, anything but a victory will compromise the harmony and cohesion of the squad.”
Chers amis, get ready for a fun match that should make for a flashy clash between the stylish French (when they choose to be so) and the uninspiring Swiss, who play like a three-point cross between Italian, German and Irish football. It’s fun to beat up on the French. They make it so easy. Even for me, who owes all to Jesuits and Voltaire, but against the Swiss I’d like to see them go on a rampage that would scare even Attila’s braids.

Haha. Total Football. And what a rampage it was! We had them under control most of the time and eventually even had the better/clearer chances.
Yes, we do have a very defensive system – who cares? As I said before, I rather have my team draw 0-0 against a tournament favorite than loose 0-3 like the USA did.
Any team will have a hard time scoring against us. Which is a good thing for us! We’ll score sooner or later.
