An interview with Gelson Fernandes
Moving from FC Sion to Manchester City where he’s gained Eriksson’s trust, Gelson Fernandes, together with Gokhan Inler has become one of the stars of the Swiss team.
What follows is an interview with French-speaking TV TSR (Television Suisse Romande):
What’s your opinion concerning your first season in England?
Generally, a positive one since I’ve played many games in my first season in a foreign country. The coach and the club are satisfied with my performance.
Where do you think you’ve improved the most?
I’ve improved in all areas: physical, technical and tactical. You can’t compare the Premiership with the Swiss League when it comes to the pace, the speed, the physical condition and the individual aspects.
Are you looking forward to Euro 2008?
Yes, I’m glad to be part of it. Pressure is rising gently. But one has to prepare oneself calmly, thinking of the others too. I believe it’s good for us to spend a long time with the team.
During the season did you keep in contact with other Swiss players?
Yes, especially with Djourou, Senderos and von Bergen.
The media and the public have been very critical recently. What do you think about it?
The pitch is the most important. I think one shouldn’t talk too much. People have a right to criticize but it doesn’t affect me. We know what good we’ve done and what can still be improved.
The Swiss team will be the youngest at Euro 2008? Should one fear the lack of experience?
The players are young but most play in European clubs. There is some experience.
Why will Switzerland play a good Championship?
Why shouldn’t we? I’m sure we’ll play well.
What will you think of, on the 7th of June, 5 minutes before Switzerland-Czech Rep.?
I’ll think of my family.
