Switzerland – Turkey, press review in a nutshell
Due to a German Exam I haven’t been able to update the blog, now that is behind (went quite well, if you’re interested) and I’ve got a couple things to catch up on.
The Press Review following the defeat was one rich in mixed feelings despite the disappointing (and unfair) result.
“Plouf” says the Matin. “Drowned” according to Blick. “Shipwreck” according to L’Express.
24 Heures states: “It’s already over”.
Reading through the articles one finds such statements as “Switzerland is cursed!”.
The association of the French-speaking newspapers and magazines, “Romandie Combi”, says: “Switzerland’s tournament ends in the same way as the preparation had started: in pain. Intense, too much to suffer and true.”
A “dagger cut” according to “Le Matin Bleu”. “20 Minutes”: “the disappointment is as great as the enthusiasm for hosting a tournament in our own country.”
“Schluss, Aus, Vorbei” says Blick. However “the team cannot be blamed, they’re European Champions when it comes to Misfortune”.
“Tages Anzeiger”: “the dream has become a nightmare, we’re hosting our own party”.
“Tagi” reminds us of those funny (and yet unfortunate) writings on the Swiss buses: “Our last stop is Wien” yet “the last stop is Basel, Wien will be a tourist visit for the Swiss players.”
“Berner Zeitung” describes the “sadness of this European tournament and feels for the Swiss tears under the pouring rain. We will recall Frei’s tears, Yakin’s missed opportunities and Muller’s unfortunate touch on the Turkish goal.”
The overall idea is of a great misfortune, and the great national tragedy that Switzerland had to suffer. No one blames the team however.
What can one blame them for?
