Switzerland - Czech Republic 0-1 There couldn’t have been a worse start

Will Switzerland’s European Championship begin in tears and end in tears?
I apologise if this entry gradually wavers into an emotional ramble but I’m shocked at how we lost this game. Some games make you realise how alive and kicking nemesis can be.
The ultimate tally is that of two penalty calls unnoticed, three yellow cards, a crossbar, your opponents scoring on their only shot and worst of all, Frei’s terribly injury.
Fortune is never the 12th player in Switzerland’s formation, how many downfalls and disappointments shattered the enthusiasm of one of Europe’s most promising teams?
The cocktail of absurdities is a hard one to swallow.
I want to find one Swiss fan who hasn’t wasted some tears for poor Alexander Frei, more human than ever, perhaps realising that his dream is over? What Swiss Fan can’t understand the anger of Magnin and Barnetta, the frustration of the entire Swiss team and the glazed and silent eyes of our poor coach Kobi Kuhn?
This should have been an astonishing win, a win to be dedicated to Kuhn’s wife, to all the Swiss players who had to leave, a win for Frei and a win for all the Swiss fans who were awaiting this tournament with great expectation.

What is left, however, is the usual meaningless dust of regrets. The ripples of Switzerland’s attacking waves crashed with the pragmatism of the Czech defence aided and unaided by an unbelievable divine help that granted them a narrow escape from the fires of St. Jakob.
Perhaps the only mistake the Swiss defence made, the only moment in which concentration was weakened, is paid dearly, too dearly.
And how will Kuhn, worried for a life he loves that is not within his power to control like a football team, speak to a team that has proven to be superior to any team yet lacking the ability to obtain the result they seek, a team with the youngest players of the continent, a team that was called upon to triumph upon the eve of their most important chance to showcase their national pride?

I believe Kuhn will not be able to boost the morale of Switzerland. I believe we will not qualify, this game was more important than it seems. I believe that if Frei doesn’t come back the team will fall apart, thinking that they do not reap what they sow. The game should have taken a different turn, I was literally rejoiced when Hakan Yaking entered the field because he was the one player who could give us the win. He did change the game but he couldn’t fight against greater powers than the ones harnessed by his foot and his brain.

Thus when Sverkos akwardly slotted home the only shot in the desert of the Czechs’ offensive tactics a hushed fear and dread fell upon the stadium and the entire country. We were brought back down to Earth and we realised how Switzerland’s time hasn’t come yet, perhaps.

I don’t want to waste too much time on the two penalty calls, although I consider the first one a genuine and crystal-clear penalty, what angered me were the yellow cards. A referee is a human in the same way as a player and the terrible emotional state of the Swiss players had to be understood. Especially since Switzerland lost its main player due to a tackle that could have deserved more than a simple foul. They say Rosetti is world-class here in Italy, I think he is terribly down-to-earth (nichts besonders, would I say).

The Czech Republic played in a way one would expect them to play and can count on the solidity of their defence, which I deeply admire although I believe that Muller and Senderos were exceptional, but their tactics will not see them through the group.

For what concerns Switzerland I was quite disappointed by Gelson Fernandes and expectedly by Streller. I believe Derdiyok should have taken Streller’s place right at the beginning of the first half and Hakan Yakin should have started the game, perhaps the first half wouldn’t have been so boring.

Thumbs Up for Benaglio (what a confident player he is!), Muller (there should be a standing ovation for this player), Senderos (Anfield is in the past), Inler (what skills does this young one possess), Lichtsteiner (MVP for Switzerland) and Magnin (what a game on both defensive and offensive positions).

To conclude this lengthy and emotional post I believe that from now onwards it will either be a dark night for Switzerland or the seeds for a miraculous and unexpected rebirth.

Next stop: Turkey, what a meaningful coincidence, we play the decisive game against the team that possibly hates us the most.

Please Kuhn and Frei, wipe away those tears and give us fans some hope because the fall was way too painful.

What a very unfortunate start! Loss of the team’s star and loss of the game! And that although the Swiss side was definitely better- More ball possession, more high caliber chances to score.
I keep my fingers crossed, Switzerland!

It was a tough loss as the Swiss were absolutely the better squad.

Is there an official word on Alexander Frei yet?

Not yet. I’ll keep you updated. Although the feeling is that it will be over for him unless Switzerland reaches the semifinal or something.
I’m really upset about this, I won’t hide it. Someone needs to pinch me, I can’t believe we lost this game.

When Frei fell on the ground i thought that was, as you say “nichts besonderes”, a one-off… When i saw him crying i thought it was over…
Please, I would give anything for Frei to get well soon. I have been watching this match straight from Thailand, and I have been expectng anything but that injury. It’s a shame that this little mistake happened and the Czech won, even though it was kind of unexpected. Let’s pray for Alex to get well soon.

PS: I’m Swiss

Nice work, 3 points… I remember thousands of matches, which did not won the better team…. (for example: Czech - Greece 0:1, semifinal, Euro 2004) Soccer is played on the goals, no goals - no win…

Yeah, it was a tough start. It’s a game in the fashion of all the Nati games I grew up with: played well, lost anyway. I’m used to it by now. ;)
Frei has a partial tear of a ligament in the knee - he’ll be out for 6 weeks.
Personally, I belive we can score goals even without Frei. Our problem is usually rather getting in front of goal. ;) We had our chances yesterday…didn’t take them…and yeah, that’s football.
Koebi has to stop starting with Streller. People don’t whistle at him because he’s from Basel…they whistel because nobody in Switzerland understands why he’s in the starting formation.
As for the penalties: the sencond one is clearly no penalty. The ball touches the arm, yes - but the arm was and stayed on the body. No movement, no intention, no penatly. The first situation…hm…could probably be given. But Barnetta takes the shot and Vonlanthen the rebound. They played on and discussions about a penalty are invain.
Ah well, we can definitely beat the Turks. Problem is, that we also need to beat the Portuguese to qualify for the next round, and that is definitely going to be a big ask.

Well to be honest I really think that Switzerland didnt deserved to loose against such a weak Cech team. All the respect for the young players they really did fight till the end especially Valon Behrami. He really did had some nice actions and I just wish Switzerland to wing against Turkey and at least a draw against Portugal and with some luck to qualify for the next round.
Best wishes from the youngest state in the world Republic of Kosova

Adrian:
I know, I remember the friendly against Brazil for example. Played way better but still lost. I guess we lack some pragmatism, the attitude the Czechs had yesterday. I agree with you concerning Streller, from now onwards I would leave Derdiyok in front with Vonlanthen and Yakin to assist him.

The second penalty was not a penalty in itself but considering the first bad call as a referee I would have given it to compensate, teaches the Czechs to keep their arms down :P.

I also believe we can beat the Turks but also for them, it’s either a win or a loss. The Portuguese are going to be a hard task, let’s hope they beat the Czechs on Wednesday.

Ralf:
I can’t believe it was Frei who got injured. Frei or Muller, the two players who just didn’t deserve to get injured. And it happened. As I wrote in this post, I believe Nemesis is against us. Unbelievable game yesterday, had we not lost Frei it could have been a different story.

Kuna:
I understand, and I congratulate the Czechs for their excellent defence. Honestly, I would have wanted the Czechs and the Swiss to qualify from this group but you kind of ruined our party yesterday. I know football goes this way but the injury was too much to cope with.

Aicha:
We have to win on Wednesday. No time to make silly calculations. It’s either a win or nothing.

Thanks for your comments

I think, it’s a bit more ‘genious’ that we lack, rather than pragmatism. Our attacks were pretty direct and that was good to see. But we need somebody who comes up with the ‘little extra’. Personally, I believe that only Yakin has that. But that’s my subjective view.
It’s going to be interesting to see what Kuhn now does up front. We could still play with two strikers (Derdiyok and Vonlanthen) or a 4-4-1-1 (Vonlanthen and Yakin). I’m not sold yet on Derdiyok though - there’s no doubt that the boy has talent. But at the moment I’d say it’s just that (yet). We’ll see. But one thing is for sure: we’ll need to win by two or more on Wednesday now.

What vexed we were those mid-heights crosses from the wings. The Czechs are tall and those crosses were pretty pointless. Yakin and Barnetta are the only true international players from the point of view of quality and technique.

I think Kuhn has no choice concerning Derdiyok.

Thanks a lot. I’m also confident! We have to win both though and start off beating Turkey 2-0 at least.
