Swiss and Foreign Press Review & a curious incident
How did the Swiss newspapers react to yesterday’s unfair defeat?
Here’s an overview
The French-speaking “LE MATIN” simply said: “Les Suisses ne méritaient pas ça” (The Swiss didn’t deserve this) and “Immense Frustration” (no need to translate that).
When it comes to Frei, a terrible title is chosen: “18h42, tout s’écroule” (18h42 everything falls apart)
German-speaking SonntagsZeitung: «Die ganze Schweiz weint mit Frei. (…) Es war ein verflixter und irgendwie trauriger Start” (The whole of Switzerland cries with Frei. It was a damned and somewhat sad start”).
Sonntag states: «Das Resultat ist wie ein Hohn. Kalt wie eine Polarnacht. 0:1 lacht es uns mit seiner fiesesten Fratze ins Gesicht. Das Resultat irritiert, es ist grausam”. (The result is a shame. Cold as a polar night. 0:1 laughs at us like a horrible child in the face. The result irritates, it is gruesome).
Italian-speaking “Il Mattino della Domenica” is less emotional: “This might have been the first game, but it was the next-to-last next-to-last game in this tournament full of expectation that just went to sh**”
French magazine “L’Equipe” stated that Switzerland didn’t reap what they sowed and that football is certainly cruel.
Italian magazine “La Gazzetta dello Sport” stated that Kuhn’s team have always good defensive systems but tend to fail upfront.
Last but not least the Czech newspaper “Idnes” admitted Switzerland’s superiority and the excellent choice of bringing Sverkos in.
There has been a bit of a scandal concerning the penalty that wasn’t given, a slow-motion video of the incident was shown on the screens of the St. Jakob Park Stadium in Basel. The crystal-clear mistake enraged the Swiss fans who expressed their anger and disappointment. Usually slow-motion videos are carefully selected before being shown to the public. This was not the case and the UEFA committee has stated that the incident will be analysed.
