100,000 crazy Dutch fans in Bern

June 10th, 2008 | By: Jan | No Comments »

Almost 100,00 people were celebrating the Oranje triumph yesterday in Bern.
During the game it was almost impossible to enter the fanzones where the oranje fans outnumbered the italian ones. Large groups of fans who had failed to enter the fanzones were searching for every possible TV screen in the Old Town.

From 20 to 30 Tons of rubbish required an entire brigade of 24 machines and 80 men to be removed: a quantity the Swiss capital seldom sees.
The head of the road maintenance has praised the Dutch fans for their splendid behaviour. Most of the fans left the streets and parks of the town immediately after the end of the party, at 3 AM.
Throughout the day one 117 people had to be escorted to a medical point following a consumption of too much alcohol (and partying). In some cases Dutch fans were assisting fellow countrymen who were clearly under alcohol effects.

Concerning vandalism and violence once again there were very few problems for the Swiss police. The only serious injured individual was an Italian who had been attacked by his fellow countrymen.

The game was also being followed on a large screen in Geneva where 20,000 people had gathered. Nothing happened and the same can be said about the 11,000 fans in Basel.

Despite being Switzerland’s blogger I can’t hide my Dutch pride and I (trying to being as discreet as possible) praise the Netherlands for their extraordinary performance. Let’s hope Switzerland will be inspired by this before tomorrow’s clash with Turkey.
