Switzerland vs. Uruguay…just to clarify some things from the last post…
Lets get a few things straight.
Due to the responses posted in the last article, I’d like to highlight a few things.
Firstly, as I clearly wrote in my last blog, I’d like to congratulate the Uruguayan National side for coming back from a goal down to defeat Switzerland 3-1 on Wednesday evening.
The reasons for Switzerland’s defeat [...]
New Blogger. Football: from a Swiss perspective.
Grüezi mittanand,
My name is Adrian, and I have just recently joined the ‘Switzerland World Cup Blog’ crew, a move which I hope will last a long time.
For my first blog, I thought that instead of keeping everyone up to speed with Swiss football, heading into the World Cup (which I WILL do), I will [...]
Euro 2008, a different, original and comical perspective
A very funny and original book has just come out in Switzerland called “Football – Switzerland 1:1″. Essentially, it’s a picture book featuring shots from Euro 2008 with some very interesting graphic comparisons.
The authors are Nino Haslach and Alain Picard and the book is available here together with a preview of some of the hilarious [...]
Lichtsteiner: Lazio’s new hero?
When Lazio fans found out that Lichtsteiner was going to play for their team, they expected him to be a back-up for young prodigy De Silvestri: the 1.8 Million Euro Transfer fee was seen as evidence that the Swiss player wasn’t worth too much, together with the general prejudice in Italy that Swiss players are [...]
Mourinho doesn’t know his Swiss football
In a humorous (and rather unnecessary) interview Mourinho has criticised fellow coaches Ranieri (Juventus) and Berretta (Lecce).
Nothing extraordinary considering the well-known big mouth of José! What is actually hilarious is that he called Berretta, Barnetta!
“Barnetta (sic) spoke to me at the stadium and didn’t say anything. I may have an irritating face, but not [...]
European Beach Soccer Championships: Switzerland are Vice-Champions!
It might appear irrelevant to speak about Beach Soccer in a football blog but it is quite impressive that Swiss beach soccer players, like Swiss beach volley up until two years ago, are potentially among the best in Europe!
Following the impressive 2005 win, Switzerland ended 2nd overall at the 2008 Euro Beach Soccer Cup [...]
Djourou extends his contract with Arsenal, Milan consider a shock Pato-Inler exchange with Udinese
Swiss International Johan Djourou has extended his contract with Arsenal although the length of it is unknown.
Djourou joined Arsenal in 2003 and has played 53 times for the London side (plus an extra 13 when he was loaned to Birmingham in 2007).
Wenger seems to have confidence in the young Swiss defender following the departure of [...]

Want to learn the Swiss National Anthem?
Lyrics:
German
Trittst im Morgenrot daher,
Seh’ ich dich im Strahlenmeer,
Dich, du Hocherhabener, Herrlicher!
Wenn der Alpenfirn sich rötet,
Betet, freie Schweizer, betet!
Eure fromme Seele ahnt
Gott im hehren Vaterland,
Gott, den Herrn, im hehren Vaterland.
French:
Sur nos monts, quand le soleil
Annonce un brillant réveil,
Et prédit d’un plus beau jour le retour,
Les beautés de la patrie
Parlent à l’âme attendrie;
Au ciel montent plus joyeux
Les [...]
Podcast: World Cup 2010 Group B Preview. "You hear that, Mr. Anderson?"
World Cup previews. They can be a bit dull and not particularly helfpul when it comes to predicting who will qualify from each group. One reason for this is that they focus too much on things like players and not enough on the really good things. Like quality of national [read more]
FIFA Has $1 Billion in Reserve Funds, But Still Doesn't Appreciate Clever Advertising
Two bits of news today. Read them both, and then decide for yourself whether the two are related.
The first story is that FIFA made a profit of $196 million in 2009, and now has a reserve cash fund of more than $1 billion. One billion dollars in the vault. Which makes FIFA sound a little like a Bond villain.
The second story is that FIFA have come down hard on South African budget airline kulula.com for what FIFA calls "ambush marketing". Basically, Kulula isn't an official World Cup sponsor, and as such is not allowed to suggest otherwise. Which makes perfect sense. However, Kulula - famous for its slightly left-field advertising campaigns - recently ran an ad in the South African Sunday Times newspaper on February 28th stating the airline was the "Unofficial National Carrier of the You-Know-What". The World Cup 2010 DJ Playlist (Musical Lineup)
(That kid immediately gets some sort of WCB Order of Merit.)
There's going to be a rather large party in South Africa this year. Some call it the World Cup.
But before there can be the real party, there must be another party beforehand. Because it's not really a party unless it's sandwiched by eight other parties of no importance whatsoever. And judging by the musical lineup for the World Cup pre-party, this will be no different. [read more]
FIFA World Cup 2026: Colombia!
There are many things which FIFA isn't very good at. One of them is putting anyone in the organization in front of a microphone, or allowing spilled words onto a page into the hands of the media. Another is running the world's football organization.
So FIFA, after handing this year's World Cup to the country with the second highest per capita murder rate, are looking to outdo themselves by sponsoring a World Cup bid by the world's most dangerous country, Colombia. Hip hip. [read more]

Defensive Play of the Weekend: Tomas "La Foca" Rincon (HSV)
Defense and Hamburg don't really go together at the moment. A 4-2 drubbing at the hands of Leverkusen last week, was followed up by a 4-3 defeat against Anderlecht in the Europa League. As such, cutting the number of conceded goals in half in their draw against Schalke this Sunday ...
